Kazi Mahmudur Rahman

Dr Kazi Mahmudur Rahman is an Associate Professor at the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). He received his PhD in International Relations from the University of Queensland, Australia, and MA in Development Studies from the Institute of Social Studies (ISS), the Hague, Netherlands. He has recently published in leading development studies journals such as ‘Development and Change’ and book chapters in Palgrave Palgrave Macmillan and Edward Elgar. He was involved in a three-year research project on “Changes in the Governance of Garment Global Production Networks: Lead Firm, Supplier and Institutional Responses to the Rana Plaza Disaster” in collaboration with the London School of Economics, the University of New South Wales, the Freie University, Berlin and University of Gothenburg. This research was funded by Volkswagen Foundation, Germany. Recently, he completed a research project on ‘Research on Purchasing Practices of Key Brands in Australia’ jointly coordinated by Monash University and Oxfam Australia. Currently, he is conducting research on the ‘Decent work intervention in the informal sector workplace’ funded by BRAC-SDP. Previously he taught at University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), East West University, Bangladesh, University of Southern Queensland (USQ), Springfield campus, Brisbane and University of Queensland (UQ), Australia. He worked more than 7 years at Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD). He was a visiting fellow at BRAC institute of Governance and Development (BIGD). He also worked at Centre for Enterprise and Society (CES), ULAB and Center for Critical and Qualitative Studies (CQS), ULAB during 2017-2020. He carried out several research consultancies with ILO, ADB, DFID, UNDP, Water-Aid, CED-BRAC University, BRAC-SDP, Oxfam Australia, UNESCAP, MCCI, BGMEA and UN-Women. His research covers various issues relating to sociology of labour markets; political economy of the Ready-Made Garments Industry, poverty and inequality; trade related issues and global governance. He and his colleagues at CPD prepared research report on ‘Trade and Human Development in South’, which was published as a part of Human Development Report in South Asia 2009. He has also accomplished evidence-based policy research on ready-made garments, migration and regional connectivity as a part of Copenhagen Consensus, Bangladesh Priorities.
