Nazrul Islam (born 3.1.1948) is a Professor of Sociology and Director (Dean), School of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) He was also the past Chairman, Department of Sociology at the University of Dhaka. He is the current Editor of the Bangladesh e-Journal of Sociology, the current President of the Bangladesh Sociological Society and the General Secretary of the South Asian Sociological Society. His areas of specialization include, Sociological Theory, Research Methodology/ Theory Construction, Social Inequality, Development Theory and American Studies. He has taught courses in these areas at the graduate and undergraduate levels and has taught Introductory Sociology on a regular basis.

Nazrul Islam graduated from the University of Dhaka with BA (Hons.) and MA degrees in 1972 (batch of 1971) and 1974 (batch of 1972) respectively, standing First in the First Class in both examinations. Later he received his Ph.D. degree from Syracuse University (USA) in 1982 and resumed his teaching immediately thereafter at the University of Dhaka (Bangladesh), where he began his teaching career as a lecturer in 1974 and was appointed as a Professor of Sociology in 1991. He served his term as the Chairman of the Department of Sociology from 1994 to 1997 and continued to teach there till 2006. He was also an Adjunct Professor at the National University (Bangladesh) and has taught as a visiting Professor at the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (Bangladesh). He worked as a teaching assistant at McMaster University (Canada) and Syracuse University (USA) during his graduate days and has taught in various capacities at different institutions outside the universities. Thus, his teaching life extends over a period of 35 years under diverse circumstances.  

His list of publication includes six books and a large number of articles and reviews published in local and international journals. Another book titled “Intellectuals at Large” is nearing completion. He participated and presented papers in a large number of seminars and workshops as delegate/ participant at home and abroad and has chaired many academic sessions. He has organized and/or presided over many national, regional and international conferences. He is the Co-Chair of the 17th Symposium of the International Consortium for Social Development (ICSD), to be held in Dhaka from January 3 to 7, 2011.

Besides teaching and research, he has been involved in developing the curricula of different universities, including the curriculum of the Sociology Department of the University of Dhaka. At the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology he set up the Department of Sociology by organizing its courses and recruiting the teaching staff. It is today the best functioning department of sociology in the country. At the National University he helped to develop the graduate programme, including that of sociology, for the Institute of Humanities and the Social Sciences, where he also taught as an Adjunct Professor. He has also worked with the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh to organize the sociology programmes of the private universities including those of the BRAC University, Primeasia University, Shanto-Mariam University and the Independent University, Bangladesh.

His other involvements include memberships in a number of academic organizations. He was the General Secretary of the Bangladesh Sociological Association and the past Treasurer, General Secretary and the President (in that order) of the Bangladesh Association for American Studies. He was also the past editor of the Bangladesh Journal for American Studies and holds editorial responsibilities in a number of other journals. He also worked in different departmental and university committees in various capacities at the University of Dhaka and currently in the statutory and other committees of IUB.
