Stream 2: Journalism

This course is specially designed for the students who are really interested in reporting & want to be a good professional in this field. This specific course is designed to evolve the writing, interviewing skills of the students at the same time they are going to learn about the beat reporting and investigative techniques of reporting. And all this thought will encourage them to work with the newspaper where they can explore their journalistic mind with the help of theoretical background. Students develop investigative skills, study online and computer-assisted reporting techniques, learn how to follow the trail of a story and track the impact of decisions made by policymakers. Students also discuss journalistic ethics and the impact reporter’s actions and decisions have on this process.

This course is designed for the students who are interested in TV reporting and willing to take up journalism as a profession. TV reporting recently has emerged as a challenging job. The prime objective of this course is to orient them with the real-time scenarios of TV reporting formats, style and approaches. The students need to develop their analytical mind to file AV stories on complex socio cultural issues. The students would be encouraged to file reports live from the fields. Alongside spot reporting, the students will also receive lessons on in depth-reporting and norms relating to investigative reporting.   

This course is designed for the students who are interested in radio reporting and aims to start career in broadcast journalism. In this electronic era, radio reporting has become a challenging job for the professionals. This course would give them the opportunity to explore real-time scenarios of radio reporting. The students would be encouraged to develop analytic mind and critical thinking abilities.  Apart from spot reporting the students would be exploring investigative reporting and learn about the difference and similarities between print and radio reporting styles.   

The course is designed for the students who are willing to explore news presentation and anchoring skills inalienable for a career in broadcast journalism. This course will help the students to learn basic skills essential for radio and television news casting and announcing. The students would acquire proper knowledge and skills to run a simulation project where they will learn how to make rundown and news script preparation for ‘on air’ situation. At the end of the semester, the students will be able to develop analytic and practical skills essential for News casting and news presentation.

Sports journalism is a specialized course. The course will be a useful guideline for students who are really interested in sports journalism. The students will learn about the writing techniques and style of sports news with a view to a specialist position as a sports reporter. Sports’ reporting is a different, fast growing and exciting field. The course provides insights to the students for the need to cover different games take the interviews, analyze the current trend of sports culture, to write the stories in reporting format and at the same time to dig into news developments in the sports field both national and international.

This course aims to introduce students with fundamentals of feature writing. The students would explore fundamental concepts, definitions and techniques of feature writing.  The course would help the students develop a clear understanding of the process of writing feature stories. The students would visit fields to get first hand understanding about key elements of feature writing. They would be encouraged to develop their own angels of feature.

Development aspect is a key target and agenda for all governments in the world. Students will be introduced to concepts that embrace different facets of development including political, social, economic, infrastructure, societal, environmental, and intellectual aspects. Understanding of communication policy factor; an effective and comprehensive policy can help the state accelerate development success rate. Since the mass media play an essential role in mediating the development in the country in underdeveloped countries, systematic and comprehensive communication policies are greatly needed in these countries compared to developed and developing countries. The course is designed to focus on the nature and practice of in-depth, investigative, interpretative, trend and process reporting, with emphasis on development news features.

The course is designed to enable students to cover economic news; present reports on various types of enterprises including small and medium enterprise (SME) and produce analytic reports on cross-currents of national, regional and global economy. It combines work on key concepts of ‘global’ business and economic concepts as well as practices with real-time journalistic experience. Students will develop a better grasp of South Asian economic challenges. They will acquire a good command over presenting in-depth news stories in ways the ordinary people find clear and relevant to their daily lives.
