Mr Syed Mazharul Islam is Assistant Professor in the Department of English. He joined the university on 1 February, 1993 as its first full-time teacher, and has been teaching, testing, designing courses and programmes for well over seventeen years now.
He taught in the Department of English, Dhaka University as a part-time teacher. Earlier, he was Manager of Dhaka British Council’s English Language Teaching Resource Centre (ERC) and was responsible for the administration of the centre, management of its resources, visiting educational institutions, and planning and conducting teacher training workshops and language improvement courses for teachers of English at all levels. During his time with the British council, he was a member of the NCTB (National Curriculum and Textbook Board, Bangladesh Government) English Textbook Revision Committee as a British Council expert.
He has got overseas teaching experience too. He worked in Libya as an English teacher, and as Vice Principal of Bangladesh School and College in Abu Dhabi. Recently, he returned from Saudi Arabia after a stint as a faculty member in the Department of English at King Khalid University.
He received an M.A. in English Literature from Dhaka University as well as an MA in TESOL from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, U.K. He also attended a Teacher Training and Resource Management Certificate Course at Bell College, U.K. His professional interests include ELT course design, material preparation and adaptation, testing, and the impact of instructional intervention in Second Language Acquisition (SLA).
He has published a number of articles in refereed journals, and has written textbook chapters for the Bachelor of Arts programme of Bangladesh Open University. Besides, he has co-authored a chapter evaluating the impact of environmental factors and pollution on the Bangladesh coast in a three-volume work entitled “Seas at the Millennium” published by Elsevier Science, UK.
